Official data reveals that in under half a year since its inauguration, the Kochi Water Metro has efficiently transported over a million passengers.

On last Saturday, 7,891 passengers boarded the service, bringing the total count to 1,024,870. Kochi proudly holds the distinction of being India's sole city with a Water Metro Project.

The Kochi Water Metro is an integrated water transport initiative that seeks to enhance connectivity between the mainland and the islands of Kochi.

These boat services, functioning as an extension of the Kochi Metro, were officially introduced on 25 April, commencing commercial operations on 26 April.

The service is approaching its six-month milestone on 26 October, having started impressively with more than 6,500 passengers on its very first day.

An official shared, "We achieved the remarkable milestone of 1 million passengers on October 16... This milestone represents a significant accomplishment, with an average of approximately 6,000 passengers availing themselves of these boat services."

Currently, the Kochi Water Metro operates on the Bolghatty-Vypeen-High Court and Vyttila-Kakkanad routes with a fleet of 12 boats. Moreover, the project has plans to extend its operations to two additional routes in the near future.

The grand vision for this project includes the development of 15 identified routes, ultimately connecting up to 10 islands around Kochi. Once fully operational, the Kochi Water Metro will span 76 route kilometers, utilising 78 ferries and serving 38 terminals. This expansive system is expected to benefit over a hundred thousand people, with a projected daily footfall of around 35,000 passengers.
