In response to the increasing congestion of vehicles in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has unveiled plans to create additional parking facilities, accommodating more than 22,000 vehicles in four heavily populated city wards.

City Guardian Minister Deepak Kesarkar made this announcement during a press conference.

BMC's initiative includes the establishment of parking spots in various areas:

  1. In D Ward, parking facilities will be introduced at Kemps Corner, Walkeshwar, Grant Road, Breach Candy, Malabar Hill, Girgaum, and Mumbai Central.

  • In G/south, parking spaces will be made available in Worli, Prabhadevi, and Lower Parel.

  • K/West will see the addition of parking spots in Andheri.

  • In the S Ward, the Bhandup and Kanjurmarg regions of the eastern suburban area will be the fourth ward to receive these facilities.

  • With Mumbai's vehicle population steadily increasing, citizens have been expressing their concerns about the shortage of parking spaces. According to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, as of mid-October 2023, there were 140,899 registered vehicles across all three divisions of Mumbai (MH1, MH2, and MH3).

In 2022, 180,528 vehicles were registered, and in 2021, the number stood at 146,046, as per the Indian Express report.

The total number of vehicles in Mumbai now exceeds 4.5 million, with over 2.66 million being two-wheelers, 1.44 million four-wheelers, and 1.162 million freight vehicles, along with more than 230,000 rickshaws.

Additionally, the city boasts a fleet of 2,060 ambulances.

To tackle the parking challenges faced by residents, the civic body will initiate the first phase of its on-street parking project, providing 127 parking spots in D Ward, 86 in G/south, 220 in K/West, and 108 in S Ward.
