The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has floated a tender for procuring 22 train sets of six cars each for line-5, which will run from Thane to Kalyan via Bhiwandi.

Additionally, the design-build and maintain tender, valued at Rs 2,640.72 crore, encompasses CBTC signaling and train control, telecommunication, platform screen doors, and depot machinery and plant.

The selected bidder will be responsible for design, manufacturing, supply, testing, commissioning of all the systems of line-5. Additionally, the manufacturer has to maintain the coaches for a period of 15 years.

As per the bid document, rolling stock for the corridor must be modern, lightweight, stainless steel, and capable of unattended train operation, conforming to Grade of Automation-4 (GoA4) driverless technology.

There will be PSDs installed at all platforms, acting as barriers between the track and the edge of the platform. These barricades will stop people from entering or falling in the track area.

Stretching over 24.52 kilometres, the fully-elevated line-5 will connect Thane to Kalyan through 16 stations, with a maintenance depot at Kasheli, benefiting commuters in the central suburbs.

In the second phase, the 12.32 km line will connect Dhamankar Naka in Bhiwandi to Kalyan APMC. However, the final alignment of phase-2 is yet to be finalised.

The project with an estimated cost of Rs 8,416.51 crore is being funded by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and OPEC Fund for International Development.
