Railways stations at Old Delhi, Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar in the national capital are among 16 stations across the country slated to be redeveloped in public private partnership (PPP) model.

Stepping up efforts to modernise railway premises with improved amenities, Indian Railways has opted for both engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and PPP models to redevelop 200 stations across the country.

Recently, the government has approved the redevelopment of New Delhi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus at Mumbai and Ahmedabad stations using money from its own coffers under EPC model instead of going for PPP.

However, while the majority of stations are being developed in EPC model, there are also a few selected to be redeveloped in PPP model, said a senior Railway Ministry official.

The other stations selected to be offered to private players for redevelopment are Bangalore City, Vijayawada, Dadar, Kalyan, Thane, Andheri, Tambaram, Coimbatore, Pune,  Baroda, Bhopal, Chennai Central and Avadi.

All these stations are to be redeveloped in PPP mode and for which the tenders worth Rs 12,000 crore would be floated inviting real estate players, said the official.

Preparations are also in the final stage for inviting real estate players for Old Delhi, Nizamuddin, Pune and Bangalore City stations while detailed reports are nearing completion for remaining stations.

As far as EPC mode is concerned, tendering process for 47 railway stations is completed with physical work has started at 32 stations.

According to the railways, a master plan to revamp 200 railway stations is ready and work would commence accordingly.

The redeveloped stations would witness vertical growth with creation of overhead spaces on the stations which will have world-class facilities including waiting lounges and food courts, besides amusement facilities for children.

All stations will provide a platform for the sale of regional products.
