The Yamuna Expressway industrial development authority (YEIDA) has decided to widen the 165 km long Yamuna Expressway to eight lanes from the present six lanes.

YEIDA directed Jaypee Infratech Limited on Tuesday (10 January) to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for this expressway widening project within the next three to four months.

YEIDA, established in April 2001, is the nodal agency responsible for implementing the Yamuna Expressway Project and allied development in the region.

Six-lane wide Yamuna Expressway connects Greater Noida with Agra via Mathura.

“According to the concessionaire agreement, the toll operator has an obligation to widen the 6-lane-wide expressway to 8 lanes because the number of commuters has increased to 32,000 per day. When we realised that daily commuters have increased to 32,000, we told Jil to widen the expressway," Arun Vir Singh, chief executive officer of YEIDA, told Hindustan Times.

“Once the DPR is submitted, it will be approved so that work can begin. Our aim is to finish the eight-lane expressway within a year,” CEO Singh said.

To increase the safety of commuters, YEIDA also directed Jaypee Infratech to increase the height of the side median to prevent vehicles from falling off the road.
