The work on phase-1 of the Noida International Airport (NIA) at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh (UP) has reached 20 per cent progress.

This upcoming greenfield airport in Gautam Buddha Nagar district will enhance domestic as well as international connectivity to and from Delhi-NCR, Noida and Western Uttar Pradesh.

The airport, billed to be India's largest upon completion, will be developed in four phases, after which it would have an annual passenger capacity of 70 million and two terminal buildings, spread across an area of 5,000 acres.

“The 17 km boundary wall around the airport site has been completed and the electricity substation with 11 kVA capacity is ready. The work progress is on schedule. Some work on the runway, air traffic control building and terminal building has been completed,” Arun Vir Singh, chief executive officer of Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) told Hindustan Times.

As per the concession agreement, the first phase for 12 million passengers per annum is to be completed and made operational by September 2024.

In November last year, the Swiss Airport company Zurich Airport International AG (ZAIA)  won the contract to build and operate the airport.

The Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a subsidiary of the Swiss firm ZAIA, which is developing the airport, recently said the first phase of the mega aviation project is on schedule.

YIAPL has selected Tata Projects Ltd. to undertake the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) of Noida International Airport.

The construction work on the site started only in June 2022 after the selection of the EPC agency.

On the other hand, the Uttar Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has already begun the preparation work for the second phase of the airport.

In November, Gautam Buddh Nagar district administration sent a proposal to the Uttar Pradesh state government for the acquisition of land for the second phase of NIA.
