The Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD), a constituent unit under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), is carrying out detailed geological investigations for Uranium in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, as per a senior AMD official.
The AMD is authorized to recognize and assess mineral resources of titanium, zirconium, uranium, thorium along with rare earth minerals, comprising uranium and thorium in prospective geological domains of India.
Uranium is utilized as a fuel in nuclear reactors and the AMD conducts investigations in multiple places in the country to identify and evaluate uranium resources, PTI reports.
With the backing of the Indian Nuclear Society (INS), a seminar on ‘Radiation and Environment’ was arranged in the premises of the AMD recently.
D K Sinha, director of AMD and chairman of IND’s Hyderabad Chapter, explained that the seminar aimed to spread awareness regarding the advantages of nuclear science and technology and eradicating myths over its environmental consequences.
Several scientists who attended the conference seconded the thought that nuclear energy is a durable green energy source and they even vouched for its importance in realizing the objective of the low-carbon footprint.
