The Karnataka government on Wednesday (12 August) decided to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the Bengaluru violence which led to the killing of at least three people and heavy arson, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said, FirstPost reported.

Speaking to reporters about the riots by a Muslim mob, Bommai said, "There are National Human Rights Commission guidelines for such a situation, as per which the inquiry will be conducted by the district executive magistrate."

"This decision was taken at the meeting headed by the Chief Minister," he added.

An irate Muslim mob went on a rampage in Bengaluru on Tuesday night after taking offence to a social media post by the nephew of a local Congress MLA.

The rioters indulged in rioting and arson, attempted to set on fire the residence of Congress MLA Akhand Srinivasa Murthy and a nearby DJ Halli police station. The mob also vandalised houses, torched police vehicles and pelted stones at the cops.

The state Home Minister earlier said that rioters would be made to pay for the damages made to the public property and the funds are expected to be recovered from their property.

Bommai announced that as per the Supreme Court directive the damages to public property would be recovered from the rioters.

At least 145 people have been arrested by the cops and the arrests will continue, the Minister said.

The state has requested for six additional CRPF companies to ensure peace.
