In a big push for the tourism sector in Uttarakhand, the state government is set to open up 42 more mountain peaks for adventure activities, in addition to the 83 peaks which are already accessible to mountaineers and trekkers, reports Times of India.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had in 2019 issued a directive to allow opening up of 137 mountaineering peaks across four states and Union Territories (UTs). However, the implementation of the same had been delayed on account of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the state's forest department has formed a four-member committee headed by the chief wildlife warden for clearance for the 42 peaks.

The peaks which the state government has decided to open up include five peaks of the Panchachuli mountain range in Pithoragarh, Janhukut and Chirbas Parvat in Uttarkashi.
