In a major setback for former Malaysian prime minister (PM) Mahathir Mohamad's bid to return back to power, the Malaysian king has appointed seasoned politician Muhyiddin Yassin as the new PM of Malaysia, reports Times of India.
Yassin, aged 62-years-old will now be sworn to power on Sunday (1 March). It should be noted that he had been serving under Mohamad led Government in Malaysia as the home minister. Prior to that, he had also served as the deputy PM of Malaysia in the regime of Mohamad's predecessor PM Najib Razak. Mohamad had defeated Razak in the elections which were held in 2018.
The King made the decision to appoint Yassin as PM of the nation after receiving representations from all party leaders and independent members of the Parliament of Malaysia following which he learnt that Yassin has the support of majority of the members.
