Union Road Tranport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday (10 November) said that the Centre is ready to support the proposal for bringing petrol and diesel under Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime if all the states back the idea.

He added that bringing fuels and gas under GST will result in reduction in the overall rates while the revenue will go up and states will also benefit.

"The Centre has made this proposal," Gadkari said while replying to a question on inclusion of fuels in GST during the Times Now Summit.

He, however, did not name the states resisting the proposal to bring fuels under GST.

Gadkari also spoke about the high fuel prices in the country and said the Centre had taken positive step by reducing the excise duty on petrol and diesel.

"Following this great initiative by the Centre, even states will lower the duty soon," the minister said.
