Terrorist Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh is being provided comfortable facilities in the Hyderabad Central Jail allegedly at the behest of Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s close aide Brigadier Ijaz Ahmed Shah, the Sunday Guardian reports.

Sheikh is under detention along with his three associates for murdering American ‘The Wall Street Journal’ journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002.

However, the Sindh High Court acquitted Sheikh from the murder charges and commuted his jail sentence to seven years. The court stated that the terrorist had already spent 18 years in jail and hence his prison term would be considered completed.

Furthermore, a two-judge bench of the Sindh HC ordered security agencies on 24 December to refrain from keeping Sheikh and his fellow aides under detention. The judicial body even declared all notifications of the Sindh government in relation to their detention to be “null and void”.

Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh is one of the three terrorists that the Indian government had released in 1999 in exchange of the passengers from the hijacked Indian Airlines IC-81 flight in Kathmandu.

Interestingly, Brigadier Shah was the chief of ISI at that point in time as a source explained, “He is a man who knows a lot of secrets, his closeness to Sheikh is known to everyone. You can ask any former ISI man and he will tell you about how Shah played a key role in the release of Sheikh from Indian prison.”

Shah was the home secretary of Punjab at the time of Pearl’s death and even kept Sheikh at his residence though the latter was said to be in ISI custody. Brigadier Shah is now serving as the Minister of Narcotics Control in Imran Khan’s government.
