India on Wednesday (17 June) was elected to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) with overwhelming support of United Nations members. India received 184 out of 192 valid votes in its favour.

The ten non-permanent Security Council seats are distributed among five regional groups and elections are held every year for the five that fall vacant on alternate years.

Ambassador T S Tirumurti - India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations expressed delight at India's election to the UNSC for 2021-22.

As per reports, this election will help bolster India's claim for a permanent UNSC seat in a reformed council along with nations like Japan, Germany and Brazil.
