Indian Railways Continues Stellar Safety Record: No Deaths In Railway Accidents, Two Years In A Row

Speaking during the Union Budget discussion, Minister for Railways Piyush Goyal said there had been no loss of life due to train accident in the past two years from March 2019 to Match 2021.

Attributing this good news to stringent safety measures, Goyal said that the main focus is on safety and security of the passenger.

Last month, in answer to related question, the ministry of railways had enlisted several safety and security measures.

Some of them are produced below.

Rashtriya Rail Sanraksha Kosh (RRSK) has been introduced in 2017-18 for replacement/renewal/upgradation of critical safety assets, with a corpus of Rs 1 lakh crore for five years, having annual outlay of Rs 20,000 crore.


Block Proving Axle Counter (BPAC) to ensure complete arrival of train without manual intervention before granting line clear to the next train have been provided on 5,788 block sections up to 31 January.

Automatic Train Protection (ATP) System to prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) have been provided at 595 Route Km.

All electric locomotives are equipped with Vigilance Control Devices (VCD) to ensure alertness of Loco Pilots.

The lower house passed the Demands for Grants under control of the Ministry of Railways 2021-22 under the Union budget stage two discussions, yesterday 16 March.
