The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala has decided not to prorogue (terminate) the assembly session in order to avoid an address by Governor Arif Mohammad Khan.

Like the first assembly session after every election, the first session of every year is also addressed by the Governor. So by not proroguing the current session, the upcoming budget session in January would be considered as a continuation of the current session.

According to political commentators, the reason for the extraordinary move is the ongoing tussle between the state government and Khan regarding the appointment of vice-chancellors to state universities.

In further proof of the frosty relationship, neither Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan nor any of the ministers from his government attended the Christmas party hosted by Khan at the Raj Bhavan.
