Just a day after calling for a United Nations (UN) backed referendum on the nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise and the Citizenship Amendment Act, West Bengal Chief Minister (CM) has now made a sharp u-turn over her remarks as per reports of Indian Express.

Amidst backlash over her assertion, CM Banerjee said that she had only suggested the conduction of an opinion poll by impartial experts and members of the human rights commission, the process for which could also be observed by the UN.

Governor Dhankar underscored that he stood against any citizen trying to take dispute resolution to an outside body, including the UN. He said, "This does not do any honour to the country."
