Mehbooba Mufti-led People's Democratic Party (PDP) expelled its Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) Nazir Ahmad Laway for attending the swearing-in of the democratically appointed first Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), Girish Chandra Murmu, reports Asian News International (ANI).

The party has justified the move to oust its sitting MP on the ground that the decision of Laway to attend LG Murmu's oath-taking ceremony was a contravention of the party's stand against the situation in J&K after the revocation of the special status accorded to the erstwhile state under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution.

Meanwhile, the erstwhile state transitioned into a full-fledged Union Territory (UT) of India on 31 October, the day which also marks the birth anniversary of India's first Union Minister of Home Affairs, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
