Former US President Donald Trump.
Senator Mitt Romney in an interview with the New York Times DealBook DC Policy Project has said that former President Donald Trump would win in a landslide if he ran for GOP nomination.
“I don't know if he will continue playing a role, I don’t know if he'll run in 2024 or not, but if he does, I'm pretty sure he will win the nomination,” said Romney.
The Utah Senator believes that Trump, by far, has the largest voice and a big impact in his party.
“I look at the polls, and the polls show that among the names being floated as potential contenders in 2024, if you put President Trump in there among Republicans, he wins in a landslide,” said the Senator.
He added, “a lot can happen between now and 2024,” and that he is not "great at predicting."
Senate Romney was one of the seven Republican senators who voted in favour of convicting Trump over the events leading to the Capitol insurrection on 6 January 2020.
Romney is the only Republican senator to vote to convict Trump in both of his impeachment trials. However, Trump was acquitted as he was short of the 67 total votes needed to convict him. He was also the only Republican senator who voted in favour of convicting Trump in his first impeachment trial last year for his dealings with Ukraine.
As per the POLITICO-Morning Consult poll, which was conducted in the days after his second impeachment trial, 57 per cent of Republican voters said they want Trump to play a major role in their party going forward, and 80 per cent of Republican respondents said they viewed him favourably.
53 per cent of Republicans surveyed said they would support Trump in the 2024 GOP presidential primary, while other 12 per cent Republican supporters said they would support former vice-president Mike Pence.
Trump has confirmed that he will attend the Republican National Committee’s spring donor retreat in April. However, he has not said anything about whether he plans to run in the 2024 GOP nomination or not.
