A team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) from Kochi raided shops in North Chennai on Thursday (6 April) in connection with the case of a group of Sri Lankan nationals who planned to revive the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a terrorist organisation through drug smuggling and arms trafficking.

A huge amount of unaccounted cash, i.e., Rs 69 lakh was seized from the shop of the main suspect Muhammad Ilyaz, located in Chennai's Burma Bazaar.

The NIA team also raided his home and seized 10 kilogram of ganja, 300 grams of gold and 1000 Singapore dollars.

Ilyaz has been arrested by the NIA.

All of them were allegedly hand in glove with Haji Salim, a Pakistan based drug-runner and believed to be connected to the March 2021 incident, near Kerala's Vizhinjam port, in which Indian defence forces had intercepted a boat containing 300 kilograms of heroin, five AK-47 machine guns and 1000 rounds of 9mm bullets.
