According to a report from The Sunday Times, scientists in Wuhan were allegedly involved in a covert project with the Chinese military of combining deadly coronaviruses to create a new mutant virus.
The investigators believe that this project caused a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which ultimately started the Covid-19 pandemic.
The report is based on extensive research from hundreds of confidential documents, including internal memos, scientific papers, and email conversations.
One of the investigators stated that it has become increasingly clear that the Wuhan Institute of Virology was involved in the creation, promulgation, and cover-up of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The reason why there is no published information on the experiments is that they were done in collaboration with researchers from the Chinese military, who were funding the project. The investigators believe that China is pursuing bioweapons.
The Wuhan Institute of Virology began examining the origins of the Sars virus in 2003.
However, in 2016, researchers found a new type of coronavirus in a mineshaft in Mojiang in Yunnan province, similar to Sars.
China did not report these deaths, but the virus found then is now recognised as the only member of Covid's immediate family.
They were then transported to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and the scientists' work became classified.
According to the report, over a dozen investigators were granted access to "metadata, phone information and internet information" collected by the US intelligence services.
The report revealed that US State Department investigators found the Wuhan Institute of Virology to have collaborated on publications and secret projects with China's military, despite presenting itself as a civilian institution.
The Wuhan Institute of Virology has been engaged in classified research, including laboratory animal experiments, on behalf of the Chinese military since at least 2017.
