A Status Quo order has been passed in the Bengaluru Idgah Maidan matter wherein the Karnataka Waqf Board had approached the Supreme Court against an order of the Karnataka HC.
The order of the HC allowed the state government to consider applications that sought permission to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi at the Chamarajpet Idgah Maidan in Bengaluru.
A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, comprising of Justices Indira Banerjee, AS Oka and MM Sundresh passed the said order.
Previously a Single Judge of the Karnataka High Court had allowed the use of Idgah Maidan for religious Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations only, but a Division Judge bench modified the order, and had asked the State Government to consider applications for conducting religious activities in the ground while the land dispute with respect to the said property is pending.
With festivities beginning tomorrow, the latest order of the Supreme Court practically rules out Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at the Chamarajpet Idgah Maidan in Bengaluru this year.
