Tata Electronics is planning to hire around 45,000 women workers within the next 18 to 24 months at its iPhone parts plant in Tamil Nadu’s Hosur.

This is being done with the idea to benefit from Apple diversifying its supply chain beyond China. China continues to struggle from lockdowns due its Covid-Zero policy and tensions with the US.

The factory currently produces iPhone housings which hold the device together and employs around 10,000 workers.

Three of Apple’s longstanding partners—Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron that are present in the country have ramped up production. Foxconn recently started manufacturing the latest model, iPhone 14 at its Sriperumbudur plant.

While the Tatas are now focused on manufacturing iPhone parts, in the future they plan to go up the value chain and assemble iPhones at the Hosur plant through the joint venture route with contract manufacturers like Wistron.
