The 400-year old Fort Dansborg at Tharangambadi, (Tranquebar) in Nagapattinam district, built in an Indo-European style, is set to undergo major renovation works, reported News18.

It was an important base of the Danish East India Company during the sixteenth century and was built on land granted by the then ruler of Thanjavur, Ragunatha Nayak.

An agreement was signed with the Danish Admiral Ove Gjedde in 1620.

After that it has been maintained by the Tamil Nadu government's Archaelogy Department. A number of artefacts from the Danish era are exhibited.

The renovation works to be undertaken at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore would include a 226 metre paver block road, installation of six high mast lights, construction of sanitary facilities and space for street vendors, said District Tourist Officer (DTO), T Aravintha Kumar.
