Uttar Pradesh (UP) has emerged as the leader among all other States and Union territories (UTs) in setting up of compressed biogas (CBG) plants under the Centre's Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation scheme, reports Hindustan Times.
Under the scheme run by Dharmendra Pradhan-led Union Ministry of Petroleum, the Centre has so far issued a total of 515 letters of intent to set up CBG plants across the nations. Of these, a massive share of 126 plants has been issued to Uttar Pradesh.
A distant second position is held by Maharashtra with 75 plants, followed by 59 plants being setup in Haryana, 35 in Andhra Pradesh, 32 in Gujarat, 25 in Karnataka, 24 in Madhya Pradesh and Punjab each, and 22 in Chhattisgarh.
Delhi and Jharkhand have bagged a total of seven plants each, Rajasthan five, while Assam, Goa, and Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) have got the go ahead for two plants each.
The Ministry is aiming to install a total of 5,000 CBG plants across the country by 2023, with the capacity to produce as much as 15 million metric tonnes of CBG, to proportionally bring down India's dependence on energy imports.
