The S Jaishankar led External Affairs Ministry on Tuesday (1 December) sternly opposed Canadian Prime Minister's remarks over protest by Punjab farmers at the Delhi border.

Trudeau on Monday (30 November) had remarked that, "The situation is very concerning. All of us are worried about family and friends, and this is a reality for many. Let me remind you. Canada will always defend the rights of peaceful protesters. We have intimated our concerns to the Indian authorities."

In response to Trudeau's statement, the External Affairs Ministry has said that it has seen some ill-informed comments by Canadian leaders relating to India farmers which are unwarranted, considering they pertain to the internal affairs of a democratic nation.

It was earlier reported that pro-Khalistani elements in Canada have joined the chorus against the Indian farm laws. This includes Khalistani sympathisers like Sukhminder Singh Hansra, the senior member of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) Canada branch and the separatist group Sikhs For Justice.
