1,273 Maharashtra Police Personnel So Far Tested Positive For Coronavirus; 11 Dead

Maharashtra Police has said at least 1,273 of its personnel have so far tested positive for novel coronavirus and 11 of them have lost their lives, news agency ANI tweeted on Monday (18 May).

Out of all infected cops, 291 have been completely cured of COVID-19. The department said the total infected cops also included 131 officers.

Cops, medical professionals, and healthcare workers across the country have been widely exposed to the virus, mainly due to being posted on frontline duties.

Maharashtra has been the worst-affected Indian state due to COVID-19 pandemic with 33,053 total confirmed cases so far. The state has also reported nearly 1,200 deaths due to the virus, according to the data provided by Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

State capital Mumbai, in particular, has been the biggest hotspot of infections in the country. It has reported over 20,000 positive cases, while 734 people have passed away due to the virus.

Last month, Mumbai police had asked all its personnel above the age of 55 years of age to go on paid leaves and stay home. The decision was taken after three Mumbai cops had succumbed to to deadly virus.
