180 Jamaatis Present Themselves Before Uttarakhand Police For Testing After Ultimatum; Two Booked For Attempt To Murder

The Uttarakhand Police has started booking Tablighi Jamaat members who have not presented themselves before the administration for medical examination under the charge of attempt to murder under Section 307 of the Indian penal Code (IPC), reports Hindustan Times.

Uttarakhand’s director-general of police (DGP) Anil Kumar Raturi had on Sunday (5 April) issued a 24-hour ultimatum for Jamaat members to come out of hiding, warning of stringent action against those who failed to do so. Following the end of the deadline on 6 April, the state police have booked two members of the Jamaat.

The two members of the Jamaat, who have been booked by the Police, were caught from Roorkee and Haridwar. They were found to be in hiding and were tracked down on the basis of their call details record. They have been booked for attempt to murder under section 307 of IPC, and placed under institutional quarantine.

It should be noted that after the ultimatum by the DGP, as many as 180 members of the Jamaat have come forward. Of these, 151 hail from Haridwar, 12 from Nainital, nine from Dehradun and seven from Pauri Garhwal districts.

All of them have been quarantined and are being examined for possible Covid-19 infection by the health department officials.

Uttarakhand Police have so far identified 708 members of various Jamaats or congregations - 383 were residents of the state who had gone to other states and 325 from other states had come to Uttarakhand to attend congregations after 1 March.
