After granting several leading colleges and universities in India the coveted tag of 'Institute of Eminence' (IoE), the University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a list of 20 new universities do be granted the status, reports The Hindu.
The UGC has denied the tag to several institutions including Azim Premji University, Ashoka University, Kera University and Indian Institute of Public Health. The decision has been taken on the ground of these institutions not having any national or global rankings.
Meanwhile, the UGC has also recommended the inclusion of telecom major Airtel backed Satya Bharti Foundation, which makes it the second greenfield institution to be given the tag of an IoE after Jio Institute which is backed by Reliance Foundation.
The programme aims at developing 20 world-class institutions which would put India among the best in the global education map. It should be noted that the government owned institutions which have received the tag will also be receiving a grant of Rs 1,000 crore from the Government of India.
