Sanitation in progress at an Iranian building - Representative Image (Pic via Twitter)
A total of 36 Iranians are believed to havte died due to alcohol poisoning after believing rumours that consuming alcohol would prevent them from contacting Coronavirus, BBC has reported.
The incident happened in Ahvaz, the capital of Iran’s south-western Khuzestan province. As per the report, the victims consumed either moonshine or methanol after coming under the influence of fake rumours of alcohol acting as an antidote to Coronavirus.
The problem has been exacerbated over the fact that Iran bans the distribution and consumption of alcohol over its Islamic beliefs, leading to many turning to hazardous substitutes. A total of 218 Iranians have been hospitalised over consuming alcohol substitutes.
As per reports, some Iranians were also found consuming industrial alcohol which is used as an ingredient in hand-sanitizers.
Following the incident, the authorities have arrested individuals found selling fake alcohol on the streets.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) had recently clarified that either spraying oneself with alcohol or drinking it will not protect themselves from Coronavirus.
