The United States (US) has reiterated its stand against 5G tech from China asking other countries to do the same saying that they must think of the implications of getting tech from states with ‘totalitarian vision’, Tribune has reported.

“We think that it’s absolutely critical for countries to be considering all of the long-term consequences and ramifications of going with suppliers from countries that have pursued a totalitarian vision for the role of the state in peoples’ lives and in the economy and in the culture and the like,” a senior US administration official said.

The remark comes in the series of pushbacks from the West against Chinese tech major Huawei which has often been linked with the Chinese government. Huawei meanwhile denies creating ‘backdoors’ in its tech which allow government-sanctioned snooping among others.

Huawei is fast emerging among the 5G pioneers in the world other than Qualcomm and Ericsson and threatens years of western dominance in networking. It has hence emerged as a flashpoint between the China and US.

The US has warned several countries, including India, as part of its efforts to wean them away from Chinese 5G equipment. The Trump administration had also banned US companies from selling technology and hardware to Huawei and 68 other companies over national security and IP concerns.

Meanwhile, Huawei has reported an increase in revenue to $58 billion in the first six months of the year driven largely by its smartphone business and 5G contracts.
