80 Per Cent Of Nariman Point, Mantralaya Areas In Mumbai To Be Under Water By 2050: BMC Chief

Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner (BMC) Chief Iqbal Singh Chahal has highlighted the threat of rising sea levels in Mumbai. In a grim projection, he has stated that 80 per cent of Nariman Point along with the state secretariat Mantralaya will go under water level by 2050.
Chahal added that about 70 per cent of the A, B, C and D wards of south Mumbai will be under water owing to climate change.
“Eighty per cent of the areas like Cuffe Parade, Nariman Point and Mantralaya will be under water...Means going to disappear,” the bureaucrat was quoted in a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI).
Chahal cautioned that Mumbai witnessed a cyclone (Nisarga) for the first time in 129 years and there have been three further instances of the same in the following 15 months.
Speaking at the launch of the Mumbai Climate Action Plan, the senior IAS officer asserted that this is the time to wake up to the warnings from the nature or else the current and the coming generations will have to deal with a dangerous situation for the next 25 years.
