Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s life size portrait will soon be installed in the central hall of the parliament as the committee on installation of portraits and statues has given its nod to the proposal, The Hindu has reported.

The committee, chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, comprises of Mallikarjun Kharge of Congress, Sudeep Bandopadhyay of Trinamool Congress, Anant Geete of Shiv Sena, and Bartuhari Mahtab of Biju Janata Dal among others.

As per the report, a formal date is yet to be announced but the portrait is likely to be installed on 25 December, which mark the birth anniversary of Vajpayee as well as the ‘Good Governance’ day.

Earlier, in 2010, the committee had decided to disallow further installation of statues and portraits in the parliament to maintain its neat and spacious look. However, there was a caveat in rare cases where proposals for installation could go further only after the nod of the Heritage committee of the parliament
