A Real Time-Saver: Indian Railways Adopts New Push-Pull Technology In Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani Express

The Indian Railways Central Zone has implemented the ‘push and pull’ technology in the Delhi-to-Mumbai Rajdhani Express via Bhopal. This will reduce the total travel time by 20 minutes, Financial Express reports.
A Central Railway press release said the Mumbai-Hazrat Nizamuddin AC bi-weekly Rajdhani Express (22221/22222), would now be running through the push-pull mode, with one electric engine each at the front and end of the train.
This technological integration would eliminate the need for attachment and detachment of bogies at the Kasara-Igatpuri Ghat section. Further, it would save time and cut down the total time of the train journey.
The push-and-pull technology involves engines attached in the front to pull the train and another in the rear end, to provide the extra power to either accelerate or decelerate and hence boosting speed in the process. Besides the engine acceleration, the technology would help to render a better turnaround time.
Due to speed restrictions and halts along the network, trains usually slow down the speed, leading to time loss in slowing and fastening, before and after stoppages. However, with two engines, the trains will avoid train lapse and save the time of passengers.
