Atishi Marlena with Manish Sisodia (pic via Twitter)
Following an alleged mismatch between assets and liabilities furnished by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and MLA Atishi Marlena in her 2020 election affidavit and Income Tax (I-T) return filings of the last 10 years, the I-T Department has issued her a tax notice, reports Economic Times.
After being slapped with the tax notice, Marlena on 30 June told the media that the I-T department was trying to "scare and intimidate" her. However, it should be noted that the I-T Department is said to have issued such notices to as many as 19 candidates which also include members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Also, it should be noted that AAP has said that the issuance of tax notice to Marlena is 'ridiculous' and that it exposes the "sexist and chauvinist" face of the BJP. This comes even as there are only four women out of the total 19 candidates against whom the I-T Department is said to have issued such notices. Marlena is just one of them.
The I-T Department is said to be of the view that the details shared by Atishi in her I-T returns over the last 10 years are lesser than what has been furnished in her election affidavit.
Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
