‘Ache Din’ For Indian Workers, Students As UK Plans Biggest Overhaul Of Immigration And Visa Policy In Decades

Students and working professionals from India and other non-European Union (EU) countries are set to majorly benefit from the United Kingdom (UK)‘s post-Brexit policy on immigration and visas, reports the Financial Express.
The White Paper on the new immigration and visa policy was tabled in the British Parliament and will end the special privileges accorded to European Union nationals in the UK. Sajid Javid, the UK’s Home Secretary who tabled the bill in the House of Commons said, “We are taking a skills-based approach to ensure we can attract the brightest and best migrants to the UK.”
The proposals will come into force after December 2021, as Britain completes its exit from the EU.
“As we leave the European Union, the free movement will end…This will be a system where it is workers’ skills that matter, not which country they come from,” British Prime Minister Theresa May said.
The latest policy will remove any cap on the highly-skilled migrants from across the world and further improve the post-studies work opportunities for international students.
The Migration Advisory Committee also recommended that the UK government should set the minimum salary for such skilled workers at 30,000 pounds, a proposal which has run into opposition from various companies. A consultation will now be held to review the minimum wage.
The UK government, says it will “improve the current offer” to people who have completed a degree and want to work in the country. The UK is also aiming to give time to students to find permanent skilled work, while working temporarily. All Bachelors and Masters students studying at institutions which can confer degrees will also be offered six months of post-study leave post the policy is in order.
