A view of Amsterdam (Dean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty Images)
A nineteen year old Afghan national Jawed S who stabbed two Americans in Amsterdam Central station said that ‘insults to Islam’ was a motive for his crime, Reuters has reported.
He also named a Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders during his interrogation. Wilders had announced a Prophet Mohammed cartoon contest, which was cancelled last week.
The attacker had travelled all the way from Germany to Amsterdam to carry out the attack. Prosecutors said that there was a terrorist motive behind the stabbing. Though Jawed mentioned Wilders, he did not mention anything about the cartoon contest. Further, they added that he has acted alone as per available evidence.
Injured American men are being treated at a hospital. The stabber who was shot and injured by police is also receiving treatment.
German police have searched Jawed’s place and found computer memory devices which could be used for investigation. However, the Amsterdam’s city council in its statement has said that the victims of attack may not have been chosen for any specific reason.
