Afghanistan is likely to hand over 13 Indians who were among more than 600 Islamic State terrorists who surrendered to the Afghanistan National Army in the past few weeks, reports Economic Times.

India and Afghanistan on last Sunday (25 November) had formalised the operation of their bilateral extradition treaty. It is after the formalisation of the extradition treaty that Kabul has decided to extradite the 13 IS terrorists, sources in Kabul were quoted in the report as saying.

The sources further said that the terrorists will be handed over to India after due process. This would be a key milestone in the counter-terror partnership between the two countries.

Over the past few weeks, hundreds of Islamic State terrorists surrendered after separate operations by the Afghan security forces, an Afghan official said.

Afghanistan’s Nangarhar provincial governor Shah Mahmood Miakhel said that in the past two weeks, as many as 243 ISIS terrorists and nearly 400 of their family members have surrendered. As many as 82 fighters, accompanied by 51 women and 96 children, handed over their weapons and surrendered to security forces in Achin district of Nangarhar last week.

Earlier, around 300 ISIS members, including women and children, had surrendered to the Afghan special forces in Nangarhar.
