In a reaction to the recently launched trailer of upcoming film Tanhaji starring Ajay Devgan and Saif Ali Khan, a big number of Twitter users began trending #ThanksMughals on Wednesday (20 November) protesting against the vilification of Mughal empire, The Free Press Journal reported.

Accusing that the Mughals were always portrayed as negative figures of Indian history, they argued that they had become intrinsic members of the Indian society. Some users also credited them with several things such as “Akhand Bharat (united India)“, Biryani, the Red Fort, Taj Mahal, and other contributions to India’s culture and heritage.

A user named Irena Akbar wrote, “I love the Mughals. They united most provinces in India, bringing them under federal system. They established ‘Akhand Bharat’.”

I love the Mughals.
They united most provinces in India, bringing them under federal system. They established ‘Akhand Bharat’.
They contributed immensely to the nation’s culture & heritage.
India would not be India without Mughals.

Another Twitter user credited the Mughal rulers for several government reforms.

However, several users differed in there views and argued that Mughal rulers were invaders and pursued power.

Another hashtag that trended, in contrast with #ThanksMughals, was #RapistMughals. Users claimed that the Mughals, like other foreign invaders, looted Indian wealth, murdered Hindus, and raped Hindu women.

One more user wrote, “The Mughals did NOT make India rich, in fact they looted India, butchered Hindus, tore apart temples, forced conversion, rapes, etc. They caused more catastrophe to India & its heritage. If you think otherwise go & educate yourself because this is real facts history #RapistMughal.

Ajay Devgan Starrer war saga ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ will take audience down the Mughal and Maratha empire’s rivalry times. Devgan shared the trailer on Instagram with a caption, “4th Feb 1670: The surgical strike that shook the Mughal Empire! Witness history like never before. Presenting the official #TanhajiTrailer.”

The biological period drama is based on the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s close aide and Maratha military leader Tanaji Malusare and is set to release on 10 January 2020.
