Kashmir-bound traffic was allowed, after five days of closure, on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, while fresh snowfall and rains lashed parts of the state.

The 270-km strategic highway was stranded with thousands of vehicles while the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country was closed on 25 February (Monday). Once the way was restored, and the stranded vehicles were cleaned up, authorities decided to allow Kashmir-bound traffic from Jammu on 2 March (Saturday).

“Traffic was allowed from Jammu to Srinagar this (Saturday) morning, and seemed smooth when last reports were received, despite snowfall in Jawahar Tunnel and Banihal areas as well as rains all along the highway,” said a traffic department official, according to Indian Express.

Furthermore, he said that while three inches of fresh snowfall had accumulated on the ground around Jawahar Tunnel – the gateway to the Jammu region – there was no impact from it.
