After Buyers, It’s Dhoni’s Turn: Amrapali Group Faces Legal Action For Unpaid Dues Worth 39 Crore

Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni has moved the Supreme Court (SC) against the troubled real estate developer Amrapali Group seeking Rs 38.95 crore that is due to him from the company, reports Times Of India (TOI).

“The builder, Amrapali group, owes an amount in excess of Rs 38.95 crore of which Rs 22.53 crore is towards the principal amount and Rs 16.42 crore towards interest calculated at 18 per cent simple interest per annum,” Dhoni noted.

Dhoni, who had served as the brand ambassador of the Amrapali Group and was seen in various advertisements of the company, told the apex court that the company had not paid him for his services. The cricketer has asked the court to protect his financial stakes and has requested that certain land parcels of the group should be earmarked for him so that he can recuperate his losses.

‘Cheaters And Liars’

The court is currently hearing petitions filed by many home buyers who are seeking possession of around 42,000 flats booked in various Amrapali properties. In December 2018, the Supreme Court had termed the company and its promoters as “the worst kind of cheater” and “biggest liar.”

Such strong language was used by the court when the company admitted that it had diverted homebuyers' money to develop other properties like a five-star hotel in Greater Noida, malls and resorts in various parts of the country.

The SC on 28 February sanctioned the arrest of Amrapali Group CMD Anil Sharma and two other directors - Shiv Priya and Ajay Kumar - of the company against whom Delhi Police have filed criminal charges.
