Telangana will be a power surplus state by the year 2019 according to Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Deccan Chronicle has reported. The state has doubled its power generation from 7,778 MW to 15,376 MW during the last four years. In spite of this, it will fall short of being a power sufficient by 8,372 million units (MU) in the year 2018-19.

The average per capita power consumption in Telangana (1,500 units) is higher than the national average (1,122 units). The reason for this could be the state’s policy to provide 24x7 free power supply to the agriculture sector. No other state is implementing such a policy.

Power projects which will add 12,807 MW to the state’s power grid are under various stages of completion. Kottagudem Thermal Power station (7th phase) having a capacity of 800 MW, Manuguru power plant (1080 MW), Singareni power plant (800 MW and NTPC unit (1600 MW) are among the power plants which will start functioning in the state by 2019.

Among southern states, only Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are power surplus states, while Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Telangana have a power deficit. CEA report says that the anticipated power supply across the country in 2018-19 will be 13,37,036 MU while the power available is 13,98,706 MU.
