Dawood Ibrahim
Having succeeded in getting Masood Azhar designated as a global terrorist by the United Nations (UN) in May this year, India has now demanded that the UN Security Council initiate action against the D-Company, Tribune has reported.
Dawood Ibrahim, the underworld mafia-turned-terrorist head of the D-Company, is being sheltered by Pakistan and is wanted in India for the 1993 Mumbai blasts that killed 257 people.
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Syed Akbaruddin yesterday (9 July) asked for action against the D-Company along with Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiyyaba citing “a real and present danger” posed by them.
“The D-Company’s illegitimate economic activities may be little known outside our region, but for us, such activities as gold smuggling, counterfeit currency, as well as arms and drug trafficking from a safe haven that declines to acknowledge even his existence, are a real and present danger,” Akbaruddin said.
He also lauded the Council’s role in taking down the Islamic State (IS) stating that focussed action by the forum does yield results.
