After Sputnik V, Russia Likely To Register Its Second Potential COVID-19 Vaccine On 15 October

In a positive development in the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia which had already registered world's first-ever vaccine against the disease in August, is now set to register its second potential vaccine candidate, reports Economic Times.

Russia is expected to register its second vaccine developed by Siberia based Vector Institute on 15 October. The Vector Institute has already completed the early-stage human trials of the vaccine last month.

While the first vaccine registered by Russia is called Sputnik-V, the name for the latest one developed by Vector Institute is still to be unveiled.

Meanwhile, it should be noted that recently it had been reported that the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has declined the proposal by Indian pharmaceutical giant Dr Reddy's Laboratories to conduct third phase trial of Sputnik-V in India.

Dr Reddy's had partnered with the developer of Sputnik-V, Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), to conduct clinical trials in India and to distribute the vaccine.

The Indian drug regulator said that the sample size for early human trials for the Russian vaccine was “small” and asked Dr Reddy's to submit a revised proposal for phase 2 and 3 trials in the country.

Union Minister for Health Dr Harsh Vardhan had also taken to Twitter on bygone 4 October to share that the government has not yet reached any final decision on Sputnik-V. He had also assured that the government will take a decision which would be in the best interest of the people.
