Congress short-sightedness was on full display today (26 March) as it had to remove its Android application from the Play Store after the party attacked Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s application yesterday (25 March).

Congress president Rahul Gandhi had attacked PM Modi’s app yesterday claiming that the app compromised the data of its users. However, this led people to probe the Congress party’s app too and it could no longer be located on the app store after its vulnerabilities were exposed.

The privacy debate following the Cambridge Analytica Facebook data breach is now on full-steam and Rahul tried to capitalise on the issue. However, now the party is struggling to contain the fallout from Rahul’s actions.

“When Congress says they will share your data with like-minded groups, the implications are grave. From Maoists, stone pelters, Bharat Ke Tukde Gang, Chinese embassy to globally ‘renowned’ orgs like Cambridge Analytica, the field is extensive and wide open,” wrote Amit Malviya, the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) information technology head.

Notwithstanding Rahul Gandhi’s initial attack on the NaMo app, the BJP has claimed that its downloads actually increased.

This is, in any case, not the first time that Congress party or its leader Rahul Gandhi have bungled up on social media, the latest one occurring when the party had to delete its condolence tweet on superstar Sridevi’s death.
