Guatemala is following the United States’ (US) lead in shifting its embassy to Jerusalem which it recognised as Israel’s capital in December last year, the Jerusalem Post has reported.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales announced yesterday (4 March) that Guatemala will shift its embassy to Jerusalem in two months, two days after the US does so.

“In May of this year, we will celebrate Israel's seventieth anniversary, and under my instructions, two days after the United States moves its embassy, Guatemala will return and permanently move its embassy to Jerusalem," Morales announced, at a conference organised by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) with close to 18,000 people in attendance.

Morales earlier met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who thanked him for his decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Guatemala was one among the only nine countries in the United Nations (UN) that has voted against a motion condemning US action of shifting the capital to Jerusalem. US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley had earlier thanked Morales for his country’s support.

"It's important to be among the first, but it is more important to do what is right,

We are sure that many other countries will follow in our steps,” Morales added.
