Claiming that Rajputs have shown Muslims the mirror, All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has exhorted Muslims to take lessons in protecting their ‘culture’ from the Rajputs.

Owaisi, speaking against the bill to criminalise triple talaq, claimed that it was an attack on shariat and hence Muslims should oppose it the way Rajputs are opposing the film Padmaavat. He said that Rajputs being four per cent could get the film stalled but Muslims are helpless even after being 14 per cent of the population.

He also claimed that Muslim men are being unfairly targeted by the government through the bill and implored them to defend the shariat.

Rajput groups are protesting against what they claim is a distorted depiction of their history in the movie Padmaavat, and the movie’s fate still hangs in balance as they claim that their concerns still haven’t been addressed.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017, seeks to make the archaic triple talaq practice a criminal offence and proposes a three-year jail term for a Muslim man who divorces his wife in any form of spoken, written or by electronic means such as email, SMS, and WhatsApp. The bill has been passed by the Lok Sabha but has been stalled in the Rajya Sabha, with even the TDP - a part of the ruling coalition, opposing it in the upper house.

He also asked the central government to give Rs. 15,000 per month to Muslim women who have been divorced through triple talaq, and for Rs. 2,000 crore to be allocated from the central budget for it.
