After winning five seats in Seemanchal in the recent Bihar legislative elections, Asaduddin Owaisi has set his sights on the West Bengal polls next year, Times Now reports.

As per the report, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president has offered a pre-poll pact to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Owaisi has reportedly said that his party will assist Trinamool Congress (TMC) in defeating the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in the state assembly elections. AIMIM seeks to focus on the minority-dominated districts of Murshidabad, North Dinajpur and Malda.

Owaisi’s party has been subject to some scathing attacks from multiple quarters ever since the results of the Bihar polls came out. The TMC has been appealing the voters to resist outsiders as they will harass and terrorise the people.

Congress’ Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury called AIMIM a B-team of the BJP who aim to divide Muslim votes and damage other “secular parties”. “But the state of West Bengal has been rejecting the politics of polarisation and communalism since independence,” Chowdhury told Times Now.

CPI (M) and Congress held a two-hour long meeting on Tuesday night to draw out its strategy as the news of AIMIM contesting in the West Bengal polls emerged. The alliance partners aim to reach out to community leaders and notable personalities belonging to the minority community. They even plan to arrange an outreach program on the National Minorities Day on 18 December.

Meanwhile, West Bengal seems set to be heading towards a three-cornered fight in the elections next year.
