The Airports Authority of India (AAI) today (11 April) signed an agreement with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the first phase of the Kalaymyo Airport in the Sagaing Division in neighbouring Myanmar, reports ANI.

AAI Executive Director for Land Management and Business Development Anil Gupta said that AAI wanted to go global in airport development and management and that the organisation had the experience and capabilities to do so.

The AAI in the past has worked on several overseas projects, including modernisation, runway upgrades and feasibility studies in several countries including Mauritius, Maldives, Yemen, Algeria, Libya and Tanzania. In 1982, the Government of Yemen awarded the construction of Riyan Airport in Mukalla to the AAI which built the entire airport including the terminals, runways, hangars and other infrastructure. Following this, Yemen awarded the Al Ghaydha Airport to the AAI.
