Days after Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik said that “all was normal” in the state, 25,000 more security personnel have been deployed to the state. The order comes a week after 10,000 additional troops were assigned duty in the valley.
Reportedly, the Amarnath Yatra was ordered to be wound up for the time being and many large community kitchens operating in south Kashmir were also vacated on Thursday (1 August).
“Yes, we have received additional troops. Many personnel were relieved from the Amarnath Yatra duty to augment security in towns in south Kashmir,” a senior officer was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
A general high-alert has been sounded in the state and speculations are rife that centre is going to take significant measures before the upcoming assembly elections, which may provoke unrest in the Muslim pockets of the state.
National Conference (NC) vice-president Omar Abdullah, informed in a tweet that he had received a request from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti for a meeting.
“They are for a follow-up to today’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah Sb will be reaching out to political leaders of the State to meet on Sunday to discuss the prevailing situation,” he tweeted.
