Amid Falling COVID-19 Cases, Indian Railways Records Big Uptick In Passenger Movement To Big Cities

With falling COVID-19 cases and rising vaccination coverage pan-India, the Indian Railways saw over 32.5 lakh passengers including migrant workers travelling to big cities over the past seven days as per details shared by it yesterday (19 June), reports Livemint.

Many of these people travelled from areas like Eastern UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Bengal and Odisha to cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Surat, Ahmedabad, and Chennai. It should be noted that the surge in movement also comes in sync with the ease of mobility and work-related restrictions in many cities, including Delhi and Mumbai.

The Railways also shared that for the 10-day span from 19-28 June, approximately 29.15 lakh passengers including migrant workers and other passengers have booked their tickets by long-distance mail express trains from and to areas aforementioned.

As per the Ministry of Railways' statement, to facilitate the movement of migrant workers from the states of Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha to the metros like Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai, the Indian Railways is operating mail/express specials, holiday specials and summer special trains.

The Ministry also shared that the Zonal Railways were actively coordinating with various industry associations and business houses to ascertain the demand and facilitate the movement of the workers.
